Tall buildings have always captured my imagination. As a kid (and even now) I hated that the worlds tallest buildings are in some far distant land instead of here in the United States. I even had dreams of becoming a billionaire and building the worlds tallest building right here in Centerville, Utah.
This is my representation of the tallest buildings in each state compared to each other. It is to scale vertically. My intention while creating this work of art was simple: fun. This is not intended to be an authoritative list (the methods of measuring tallest buildings can vary widely) nor is it intended to settle age-long debates. I hope you just have fun while looking at this drawing. Don't go revise your cash offer to buy a skyscraper because of the new data on this map.

You may be surprised to learn that Everest is not the tallest mountain on Earth, either. That honor belongs to Mauna Kea, a volcano on the Big Island of Hawaii. Mauna Kea originates deep beneath the Pacific Ocean, and rises more than 10,210 meters from base to peak.
On January 6th, 2019 Unding Jami climbed what would eventually be announced as the tallest tree in the tropics and probably one of the tallest trees left standing in the world. (The tallest known trees are California redwoods, which have been measured up to 379.7 feet, or 115.7 meters.) I interviewed Unding twice, first as he and his team had received news of the new contender and were planning their expedition to measure its height, and again after the successful climb in January.
The new tree is all by itself, high above the tallest canopy trees, in a small, steep hollow. The science team thinks its record height is due to the hollow providing damp soils and a ridge nearby that offers wind protection. Current theories on the amount of wind stress that trees can withstand, and how far they can pump water and sugars up to their crowns, leads the team to believe that Menara is close to the maximum possible height for an Angiosperm anywhere on Earth currently.
On the expedition to climb the new tallest tropical tree were Jamiluddin Jami (Unding Jami); Fredino John; Azwan Tamring; Azlin sailim; Ahmad Jelling; Sabidee Rizan; Fyenlyvicy Thomas; Mohd Fadil Karim; Elizabath Rusili; Johnny Larenus; Dedy Mustapa; representatives from Danum Valley Management and Yayasan Sabah Group.
Central Park TowerThis building, which was designed by the same people who did the Burj Khalifa in Dubai, will be the tallest building in the country by roof-height when done in 2020. It will clock in at 1,550 feet (472 m), making it the most sky-high residential building in the world.
45 Broad StreetWith a height of 1,200 feet (366 m), this new building in Lower Manhattan is expected to be completed by 2021. If it were finished today, it would tie the Bank of America Tower for the fifth spot on a list of tallest buildings in the city.
One VanderbiltThis massive building will be the fourth tallest in the city when completed in 2021. Standing at 1,401 feet (427 m), it will have a highly anticipated observation deck set 1,000 feet above the ground.
Near Grants Pass, in the southwestern part of Oregon, the Rogue River-Siskiyou National Forest is home to the tallest known specimen and was recently measured to be nearly as high as a 30 story building.
San Francisco Giants right-hander Sean Hjelle, listed officially at 6-foot-11, tied retired reliever Jon Rauch as the tallest pitcher in Major League Baseball history on Friday night when he made his big-league debut against the St. Louis Cardinals. Hjelle had been promoted to the majors hours earlier as part of a series of roster moves that saw the Giants activate outfielder LaMonte Wade Jr. and option pitchers Sammy Long and Mauricio Llovera to the minors.
The 1,046-foot Chrysler Building was the tallest building in the world from 1930 to 1931 and was part of an intense race for this title. In 1928, developer William H. Reynolds hired William Van Alen to design the world's tallest building for a site leased at the northeast corner of Lexington Avenue and 42nd Street, across from Grand Central Station. Later that year, Reynolds sold both leases and plans to Walter P. Chrysler, who wanted to build a new headquarters for the Chrysler Corporation. Van Alen altered the plans to reflect his new patron: a domed lantern became a metal-clad spire; the frieze on the 30th floor became a line of hubcaps; new gargoyles were enormous, Chrysler Eagle radiator caps; fenders and hood ornaments became part of the decoration.
When completed, it became the tallest man-made structure in the world, surpassing even the Eiffel Tower in Paris. Its reign was short-lived. On May 1st, 1931 the 1,250-foot Empire State Building opened at 350 Fifth Avenue (Shreve, Lamb & Harmon) and became the World's Tallest Building for over four decades.
It turns out that the tallest trees on Earth are the coast redwoods (Sequoia sempervirens) that loom over the mist-shrouded coastline of Redwood National Park, in Northern California. And the king of these giants is a tree known as Hyperion, according to Guinness World Records (opens in new tab). When it was last measured in 2019, it stood an eye-popping 380 feet, 9.7 inches (116.07 meters) tall from top to base, taller than a 35-story building.
The living skyscraper was first discovered in 2006, by Chris Atkins and Michael Taylor, part of a team of researchers who, at the time, tramped through the California forests hunting for the tallest trees, SFGate reported (opens in new tab). At that time, the tree was a tiny bit shorter, at 379 feet, 1.2 in (115.5 m). Around the same time, that group discovered the second and third-tallest trees: Helios, which was then 376.3 feet (114.7 m) tall, and Icarus, which stood 371.2 feet (113.1 m) tall.
Coast redwoods are not only the tallest trees on the planet, they are also some of the oldest living things on Earth; they can live up to 2,000 years. It's not clear exactly why these trees can live to be so ancient, but the climate plays a role. Even when inland California burns in the summer, a blanket of thick fog enshrouds the coastal groves, keeping the temperature cool year-round. The coast also sees about 100 inches (254 centimeters) of rainfall a year, which also helps nurture these groves of giants, according to the National Park Service (opens in new tab).
While coast redwoods are the tallest trees on Earth, they are not the largest. The largest trees on the planet are General Sherman and General Grant, giant sequoias that cling to the rocky, fire-scarred Sierras in California's Kings Canyon and Sequoia National Parks.
Dr. Stephen Sillett, Professor and Kenneth L. Fisher Chair in Redwood Forest Ecology at Humboldt State University, recently measured and verified that Hyperiona 379.1-foot tall redwood tree, is truly the world's tallest living tree. Hyperion is the largest of three redwoods discovered this summer, which eclipse the previous world record holder, a 370.5-foot tall redwood dubbed Stratosphere Giant.
When the murrelet's nesting season came to a close, Sillett climbed Hyperion and verified its status as the tallest tree. The discovery is part of an ongoing collaboration between Atkins, Sillett and Taylor. The three have been searching the range of redwood to document all living trees over 350 feet tall. So far they have found 136 individual redwood trees over 350 feet tall. When they began their work in the 1990s, only about 25 such trees were known.
"The only reason these discoveries are made," says Professor Sillett. "is that a group of people are willing to go out looking for them. I'm lucky to be associated with Michael Taylor and Chris Atkins. We thought we'd mopped it up, as far as finding the tallest trees goes. No one has ever seen anything like this. It's the most significant discovery in tree height in 75 years. It's been pretty miraculous"
"If you look at a map, it's just amazing," explains Professor Sillett. "Most of Redwood National Park has been cut. There are really just a few drips and drabs of old growth left in there, and in these little bits that are left, there are these tall trees lurkingand we just found them. One of the amazing things about this discovery is that we learned that this park expansion in 1978 really did save the tallest trees. No one has realized that until this summer."
When Sillett was offered a job at Humboldt State in 1995, he viewed it as a golden opportunity. "No one had really done anything scientific above the ground in redwood forests before," he recalls. "I was really in the privileged position to be the first scientist to be able to explore the redwood forest canopy. So, it's been a long-standing interest with trees that's grown into an obsession with the tallest trees."
The average height of an NBA player is generally around 6-foot-6. However, the range of player's height in NBA history is over two feet (24 inches), with the tallest player standing at 7-foot-7 and the shortest player standing in at 5-foot-3.
Two players have been listed as the tallest players in NBA history - Romanian national Gheorghe Muresan and Sudanese national Manute Bol - listed at 7-foot-7. At one point during the 1993-94 season, both players were on the Washington Bullets roster.
The Washington Monument, designed by Robert Mills and eventually completed by Thomas Casey and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, honors and memorializes George Washington at the center of the nation's capital. The structure was completed in two phases of construction, one private (1848-1854) and one public (1876-1884). Built in the shape of an Egyptian obelisk, evoking the timelessness of ancient civilizations, the Washington Monument embodies the awe, respect, and gratitude the nation felt for its most essential Founding Father. When completed, the Washington Monument was the tallest building in the world at 555 feet, 5-1/8 inches. 2ff7e9595c
